What Should I Expect at My First Counseling Appointment? | Every Girl Living

A Guide for Women Considering Therapy at Every Girl Living

So, you are thinking about counseling.

Maybe a friend suggested it. Maybe your doctor recommended it. Or perhaps life has simply become too heavy to carry on your own.

You have been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, burned out, stuck, or unlike yourself. You know something needs to change. But there is one problem.

You have never been to counseling before. Now you are wondering:

first counseling appointment
  • What happens during the first counseling session?

  • Will I have to tell a stranger my entire life story?

  • What if I cry?

  • What if I do not know what to say?

  • How often will I need to come?

  • What if therapy does not work?

If you are feeling nervous, you are not alone.

Many people feel anxious before their first therapy appointment. In fact, one of the most common things we hear from new clients is, "I have never done this before, and I do not know what to expect."

This article is designed to help ease some of that anxiety by walking you through what typically happens during a first counseling appointment and what you can expect if you begin your journey with us at Every Girl Living.

What Happens at a Traditional Counseling Practice?

Most counseling practices begin with what is called an intake session.

The primary purpose of this first appointment is for the therapist to begin getting to know you, understand why you are seeking support, and determine how they can best help.

If you are attending your first therapy session, you can generally expect a few things.

You Will Complete Paperwork

Before your appointment, you will likely complete intake forms that include information about:

  • Your medical history

  • Current medications

  • Mental health history

  • Previous counseling experiences

  • Insurance information

  • Emergency contacts

  • Current symptoms and concerns

This paperwork helps your therapist understand your background and ensure you receive appropriate care.

Your Therapist Will Ask Questions

During the session, your therapist will ask questions to better understand what brought you to counseling.

Some common questions include:

  • What led you to seek counseling now?

  • How long have you been struggling?

  • What symptoms are you experiencing?

  • Have you participated in therapy before?

  • What would you like to be different in your life?

Your therapist may also ask about relationships, family history, stressors, sleep, work, health concerns, and other areas of your life.

Many people worry they will need to share every difficult experience they have ever had during this first meeting. You do not.

A good therapist understands that trust takes time. The first session is primarily about building rapport, gathering information, and helping you feel comfortable. You are always in control of what you choose to share.

You May Experience a Variety of Emotions

Some people cry during their first session.

Some feel relieved.

Some feel nervous or awkward.

Some leave feeling hopeful for the first time in a long while.

All of these responses are normal.

Beginning counseling is a courageous step. It is okay if your emotions show up.

The EGL Way: Why We Created Every Girl Living Differently

Traditional therapy is incredibly valuable. But after years of working in healthcare and wellness, we saw something was missing.

Too many women felt overwhelmed, unsupported, and left to navigate their struggles alone. They moved from provider to provider, often waiting weeks or even months for appointments, while trying to manage anxiety, burnout, stress, and everyday life on their own.

Even when women received help, the solutions were often fragmented and temporary. Many would feel better for a season, only to find themselves back in the same patterns months later. We knew there had to be a better way.

So, we created Every Girl Living.

Every Girl Living is more than a counseling practice. We are a women's wellness community that provides personalized pathways to living well through counseling, coaching, movement, education, and community—all guided by our Wellness 360 framework.

Because we believe women deserve more than symptom relief. They deserve the opportunity to heal, grow, and flourish.

Step One: You Begin With a Conversation

Your journey at Every Girl Living typically begins with a complimentary consultation.

This is not an interrogation or a clinical assessment. It is a conversation.

During this meeting, we want to hear your story. We want to understand what has been happening in your life, what challenges you are facing, what you hope will change, and what kind of support you are looking for. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and determine whether we are the right fit for you.

We believe the relationship matters. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of successful outcomes in counseling. You deserve to feel comfortable with the person walking alongside you.

Step Two: You Are Connected With a Client Liaison

One of the things that makes Every Girl Living unique is our Client Liaison. Because we know, beginning counseling can feel overwhelming.

There are appointments to schedule, paperwork to complete, insurance questions to answer, and decisions about what type of support you need. Rather than asking you to figure all of this out on your own, we provide a dedicated person to help guide you through the process. Your Client Liaison serves as your advocate, guide, and point of contact throughout your journey. She helps answer questions, coordinates services, checks in regularly, celebrates your progress, and ensures you never feel like you are navigating your wellness journey alone.

Step Three: We Look Beyond Symptoms

At Every Girl Living, we use our signature Wellness 360 framework because we believe lasting transformation requires looking beyond symptoms. Another thing we know is that anxiety does not happen in isolation. Neither does burnout or depression. Your emotional health is connected to your body, relationships, daily habits, stress levels, purpose, environment, values, and support systems. While symptom relief is important, our goal is not simply to help you feel less anxious or less overwhelmed.

Our goal is to help you live well. Together, we may explore areas such as:

Every Girl Living Wellness 360

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Sleep and recovery

  • Relationships and boundaries

  • Movement and physical health

  • Stress management

  • Meaning and purpose

  • Faith and spirituality, if desired

  • Lifestyle rhythms and habits

We believe women flourish when they are supported as whole people—mind, body, and spirit.

Step Four: Together, We Create Your Personalized Roadmap

During your first few sessions, you and your provider will begin creating your personalized Roadmap for Living Well.

Your Roadmap to Living Well | Treatment plan

This roadmap helps answer important questions:

  • Where am I right now?

  • What do I want to change?

  • What patterns are keeping me stuck?

  • What would meaningful growth look like?

  • What support do I need during this season of life?

No two women receive the exact same roadmap because no two women are the same.

Some women primarily need counseling. Others benefit from combining counseling with yoga, coaching, groups, workshops, or educational experiences. We call these additional supports our "express lanes" because healing rarely happens in one sixty-minute session each week. Growth happens through consistent practice, support, and connection.

Why We Encourage Consistency

One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting too long between appointments.

Imagine trying to learn a new language, train for a marathon, or recover from surgery while only practicing once every month.

Meaningful change requires consistency.

This is especially true when you are working to create new patterns, heal from difficult experiences, regulate your nervous system, or learn new coping skills.

At Every Girl Living, we intentionally provide multiple opportunities for support because we know healing happens both inside and outside the therapy room.

Many clients choose to participate in:

  • MindBody Yoga classes

  • Soul Bourn groups

  • Workshops and wellness events

  • Educational resources through the Living Well Lab

  • Community gatherings

  • Coaching or personal growth opportunities

Women often come to us seeking help for anxiety or burnout. They stay because they discover connection, belonging, and hope.

The Heart Behind Every Girl Living

Many women come to us feeling exhausted from trying to hold everything together. They are caring for everyone else while neglecting themselves. They are functioning, but barely. They are surviving, but they are not flourishing. We created Every Girl Living because we believe women deserve more than survival mode. We believe healing, growth and living well is possible.

Our mission is to help women move beyond simply "getting back to normal" and instead create lives marked by health, resilience, purpose, connection, and joy.

Healing is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of something new.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the first counseling appointment?

Your initial consultation at Every Girl Living is a complimentary 30-minute conversation designed to help us get to know one another, answer your questions, and determine whether we are a good fit.

Most counseling sessions are 50–60 minutes. However, healing is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on your needs and where you are in your journey, we can discuss whether shorter or longer sessions may be appropriate.

Do I have to talk about trauma during my first therapy session?

No. You are never required to discuss anything before you are ready. Trust and safety take time to build, and you are always in control of what you choose to share.

What if I cry during counseling?

Crying is completely normal and very common. Therapy is a safe place to experience, process, and make sense of difficult emotions. There is no "right way" to do therapy.

How often should I attend counseling?

This depends on your goals, symptoms, and the level of support you need. We typically recommend weekly sessions at the beginning of counseling, especially during the first one to two months, to help build momentum and establish consistency.

As you begin to make progress, many clients choose to step down to biweekly or monthly sessions. You are always in control of your journey, and together we will discuss what schedule works best for you.

Do you offer online counseling?

Yes. Every Girl Living offers both in-person counseling in Jacksonville, Florida, and virtual counseling throughout the state of Florida.

Because counseling licenses are state-specific, our therapists can only provide counseling to clients physically located in Florida at the time of their session. However, many of our other services—including educational programs, wellness resources, and select groups and coaching services—can be accessed online by women living outside of Florida.

Do you accept insurance?

Many of our therapists accept insurance for counseling and therapist-led group services.

Insurance does not cover many of our wellness offerings, including coaching, yoga, workshops, memberships, and educational programs. Because we believe healing often requires more than traditional therapy alone, we offer membership options designed to supplement what insurance does not cover and provide additional support throughout your wellness journey.

We are happy to discuss insurance, memberships, and payment options during your consultation.
